MOWING YOUR LAWN

When it comes to mowing, the biggest mistakes I see are, mowing too short, not mowing enough & mowing with a blunt blade.

Regular mowing is the most beneficial thing you can do to your lawn. Mowing frequently will encourage a thicker and greener lawn.

I recommend mowing your lawn at least once per week at a height of around 2 inches. Mow your lawn in different directions to produce a cleaner cut, and to avoid sunken wheel tracks over time.

Follow the 1/3 rule - This means do not cut more than 1/3 of the lawns length. Mowing off more than 1/3 of your lawns length will damage the grass and cause browning.

If you notice a change in colour after the lawn has been mowed, this is usually due to one or more of these scenarios: Your lawn has been cut too short. You failed to follow the 1/3 rule. You have cut your lawn with a blunt blade.

Keep your mower serviced. A blunt blade will tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly.

A lot of people think that you should cut your lawn shorter during the summer. This is in fact the opposite because longer grass will hold more moisture and therefore stay greener in dry conditions.

The only time I would suggest mowing less frequently is if your lawn is stressed due to drought or disease, or in the winter when the rate of growth decreases.

Don't leave clumps of grass on the lawn as this will smother the grass underneath causing damage.

"Some mowers just don't cut it." You get what you pay for. Some cheaper mowers may struggle to cut a thick lawn that is treated regularly.

Keep longer for the Winter. Winter days are short and the sun's rays are weak. The larger the surface area of a plant's leaves, the more sunshine it can harvest.

If you are mowing weekly or more, then I would suggest Mulching the grass. This will add nutrients to the lawn and also save time by not having to collect the grass. Only certain mowers have mulching capabilities.

If your mower allows it, its perfectly acceptable, and often necessary to mow wet grass. Its usually easier and healthier for the lawn if you mow it when it's wet, rather than mow it when it's long.
